Arenal Volcano rises 1,633 meters above the plains of Alajuela Province in northern Costa Rica. The stratovolcano erupted almost continuously from 1968 until 2010, when activity ceased and the peak returned to a dormant state. It anchors Arenal Volcano National Park, established in 1991, and sits a few kilometers from the town of La Fortuna, the main gateway for visitors to the area. The surrounding countryside remains largely agricultural, with cattle pasture and small farms spread across the volcano's lower slopes.
