Viterra Grain Elevator, Minneapolis

Viterra operates this grain elevator in Minneapolis, part of a network of grain storage and handling sites tied to Mississippi River and rail shipping. Elevators of this type are built from brick-clad concrete or tile, rising well above the surrounding grade to allow gravity-fed loading and unloading of wheat and other grains. Exterior ladders like the one running up this structure provide maintenance access to the headhouse and vents at the top. Minneapolis's riverfront milling district was once the largest wheat-processing center in the world, and elevators built for that trade have continued in grain storage use long after the original mills closed.
