CoreCivic Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton, MN
Potential site for new ICE detention center.
Prairie Correctional Facility — Appleton, MN
Closed since 2010, the Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton, Minnesota is being eyed to re-open as an ICE detention center.
First mentioned late last year as a potential site, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement last week posted a lengthy operational contract for the facility they are referring to as “Prairie Detention Facility”.
The contract says it’s objective is to “Support the development of a state-of-the-art immigration and detention network system to assist ICE in achieving its law enforcement mission, maximize efficiency, minimize costs, shorten processing times, limit length of stay, accelerate the removal process, and promote the safety, dignity, and respect for all in ICE custody. Operate a federal detention facility to house aliens 24 hours per-day, 7 days per-week, 365 days per-year basis. The facility shall house approximately 1,600 males and females of all security levels.”
CoreCivic, the owner and operator of the prison has said to have recently completed a $1 million dollar renovation. With a capacity of 1,600 beds, the detention center would double the population of Appleton Minnesota if full.
