NASA Artemis SLS Rocket Factory

In 2018, I was given the opportunity by NASA to photograph inside the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana. Known as MAF, the site is where NASA and its contractors assemble the core stage of the Space Launch System, the heavy-lift rocket designed to send the Orion spacecraft beyond low Earth orbit as part of the Artemis program. Michoud has supported U.S. human spaceflight since the Saturn V era and remains one of NASA’s primary manufacturing centers for large-scale rocket hardware. Artemis I, the first integrated test of the Space Launch System and Orion, launched on November 16, 2022 and concluded with a successful splashdown on December 11, 2022. Artemis II is planned as the first crewed mission of the program, carrying four astronauts on a lunar flyby and marking the farthest distance humans have ever traveled from Earth.
