The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy breed developed in England and named for King Charles II, who kept the breed's ancestors as constant companions in the royal court. The American Kennel Club recognizes four color patterns, including black and tan, which pairs a jet-black coat with rust-colored markings above the eyes, on the cheeks, and inside the ears. Adults typically stand 12 to 13 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 13 and 18 pounds. The breed ranks among the most popular toy breeds in the United States, prized for its gentle temperament and adaptability as a companion animal.
