George Floyd Square sits at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis, at the site where George Floyd died in police custody on May 25, 2020. Following his death, the intersection became a self-sustained memorial and protest gathering space, with residents barricading traffic and maintaining art installations, murals, and handwritten signs. Many of the signs left at the square address racism and police violence directly, reflecting the ongoing activism centered at the site. The square remained under community control for over a year before the city moved to reopen it to vehicle traffic in 2021.
