Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins, hosted the NHL Winter Classic on January 1, 2022, featuring the Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues. The outdoor game required converting the baseball stadium into a regulation hockey rink, with crews building the ice surface directly over the infield. The Winter Classic began in 2008 as the NHL's annual outdoor New Year's Day game, played in stadiums built for other sports. Target Field opened in 2010 and seats close to 39,000 for baseball.
