Covered Pedestrian Walkway near a Tokyo Train Station

Covered walkways like this one link station buildings to surrounding office and commercial blocks across Tokyo, letting commuters move between platforms and street level without stepping outside. The yellow tactile paving underfoot is a Japanese invention: Seiichi Miyake developed the raised-block system in Okayama in 1965, and Japanese National Railways adopted it nationwide in the 1970s, making it a standard fixture in train stations and pedestrian corridors ever since. Numbered signs, like the "2D" marker seen here, typically point toward specific exits or connecting platforms within a larger station complex.
