The Minnesota State Capitol, completed in 1905 and designed by architect Cass Gilbert, is the seat of Minnesota's legislature and governor's office. On August 8, 2020, demonstrators gathered on its grounds carrying signs reading "Defund the Police" and "Fund Teachers Not Police," calling for reduced police funding and the removal of school resource officers in favor of counselors. The rally followed months of protests across the Twin Cities after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis that May.
