Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane in Downtown Minneapolis

Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane lifts HVAC to U.S. Bank Plaza, Minneapolis

A Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane conducts a rooftop HVAC delivery at U.S. Bank Plaza in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. Developed by Sikorsky in the early 1960s as the CH-54 Tarhe for the U.S. Army, the type was first flown in 1962 and later adapted for civilian heavy-lift work.

The operation demonstrates how aerial lifts support maintenance and replacement of building systems when traditional tower-crane access is limited or impractical. U.S. Bank Plaza is a major office complex in the city’s central business district, where rooftop equipment changes are essential to ongoing commercial use.

The S-64’s skycrane configuration and twin-engine powerplant enable precise external-load placement for construction, logging, and firefighting, in addition to urban projects. Its design centers on carrying large suspended loads, allowing crews to reach constrained sites such as high-rise rooftops.
