George Floyd Memorial, Minneapolis: Lit Flowers & Candles

George Floyd Square sits at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis, outside Cup Foods, where Floyd died on May 25, 2020. Community members turned the intersection into a memorial in the days that followed, filling it with flowers, candles, artwork, and hand-lettered signs. The site remained a gathering place and protected zone for months afterward, with organizers controlling vehicle access to the intersection. Cup Foods, the corner store where police were called that day, continued operating through the period as the memorial grew around it.
