Sunlight streams into a cenote, a natural pit or sinkhole formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock, near Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. These geological formations were sacred to the Maya civilization, who believed they were portals to the underworld and used them for rituals and as sources of fresh water.
