Lake Street Sign at Midtown Greenway, South Minneapolis

The Midtown Greenway occupies a below-grade rail corridor once used by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, converted to a bicycle and pedestrian route beginning in the late 1990s. The trail runs roughly five and a half miles across south Minneapolis, linking the Chain of Lakes near Uptown to the Mississippi River at the West River Parkway. Lake Street, one of the city's principal commercial corridors, crosses the Greenway on a bridge above the trail. Signage along the route marks nearby cross streets and neighborhood landmarks for cyclists and pedestrians using the corridor.
